Prints Guide

  • Who does the printing?

We’ve partnered with Gelato, a global shipping platform dedicated to delivering quality prints, from sustainably sourced materials, all while producing locally for a lower carbon footprint. They have printing partners in 32 countries, helping you get your print on time. Through Gelato we offer metal framed posters, aluminum, acrylic, and canvas prints
  • What is PPI? (And DPI?)

DPI is a short for “Dots Per Inch”. In printing this refers to drops of ink per inch of paper, and 300 DPI is the standard for high quality printing, which our partner supplies. PPI, pixels per inch, is a similar measure but used when referring to digital images. The easiest way to think of this is that 300 PPI, is great for looking at something up close
  • What size should I get?

The size of the print you chose can determine how many pixels we can fit in per inch of print, which will affect how best to view it. In our store a print that’s 30x45cm (12×18 inches) will be at that 300 PPI value, so a lovely print for up close. But if you’d like something large to sit above your TV? Well 50x70cm (20×28 inches) works great! We’ll demonstrate this below

Example 1: Canvas (50x70cm, 190DPI)

Here we have a large canvas print of the Trifid Nebula. It’s only 190 PPI, but doesn’t it look amazing? Canvas prints offer great texture and contrast, while being light weight. They’re also very forgiving with how they’re lit

Example 2: Acrylic (45x60cm, 230 PPI)

Next up we have the Running Man Nebula, in acrylic. Acrylic prints give the image a feeling of depth and scale, and the print quality here is top notch. This one’s a little smaller than the canvas, but still works great as a wall piece, offering a better PPI of 230. However they are quite reflective, so make sure to light accordingly, and they mount at each corner which can restrict where you put it. Although it is possible to string picture wire between the mounts so you can use a standard hook. But be careful!

Example 3: Aluminum (30x45cm, 300 PPI)

Third up we have the aluminum print. This time we’ve stuck to 300 PPI, giving us a print size of 30x45cm and amazing detail up close. The aluminum here provides a vibrant portrayal of the Carina Nebula, and with the matte surface lighting it is a breeze

Example 4: Semi-glossy, metal framed poster (30x30cm 300 PPI)

Last up we have the Helix Nebula, displayed with semi-glossy paper, and a metal frame. The sleek black metal works well with the night sky backgrounds of our images, and the glossy plastic protector helps provide depth
