Discovered by Caroline Herschel in 1783, the Sculptor Galaxy is an excellent example of an intermediate spiral galaxy and is well defined by its intense dust lanes. On top of this it’s also known as a “starburst galaxy”, meaning that the galaxy is undergoing an intense period of star formation.
